Commercial Metal Building Skylight Installation, Replacement & Repair

Summary

Metal building skylights bring daylight into warehouses, shops, hangars, and industrial buildings with steel roofs. Most are either translucent panels that match the roof’s rib profile or curb-mounted and self-flashing units set on the metal roof. Sky Design Concepts installs, replaces, and repairs commercial metal building skylights across Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and West Texas.

Key Takeaways

  • Metal building skylights come in two main forms: profile-matched translucent panels that replace a roof panel, and curb-mounted or self-flashing units set into an opening.
  • Curb-mount skylights sit on an existing or new curb. Self-flashing skylights carry their own built-in curb, also called deck-mounted or integral-curb units.
  • Desert sun yellows and weakens older fiberglass and polycarbonate panels, so many metal roofs need replacement panels before the roof itself.
  • Skylight openings 4 feet or more above the floor below need fall protection, such as screens, covers or guardrails, under OSHA’s duty to have fall protection rule (29 CFR 1910.28).
  • Every project starts with a free on-site evaluation. Call (602) 276-5001.

What Are Metal Building Skylights?

Metal building skylights are skylights made to fit steel roofs, such as R-panel, PBR, corrugated, and standing seam roofs on pre-engineered metal buildings. They let daylight reach the floor of a warehouse or shop, which can cut the hours electric lights need to run. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that daylighting with skylights can lower a building’s lighting energy use.

There are two main types. Profile-matched skylight panels are translucent fiberglass or polycarbonate panels with the same rib shape as the metal roof, so they replace a metal panel in the same run. Curb-mount and self-flashing skylights are framed units set into a cut opening: curb-mount units sit on a raised curb, and self-flashing units have the curb built in. For flat-roof dome and unit skylights, see our dome, polycarbonate and unit skylights, and for large diffused panel systems, see fiberglass and Kalwall-type skylights.

Leaks on metal building skylights usually start at the laps, fasteners, or flashing around the panel or curb, not in the glazing itself. We trace each leak to its source and reseal or replace the failed parts. Learn more about commercial skylight repair.

Old translucent panels turn yellow, brittle, and dark under desert sun. We replace them with new profile-matched panels that fit the existing roof run, so daylight comes back without reroofing. See our commercial skylight replacement service.

For new openings, we install curb-mount skylights on raised curbs or self-flashing units with built-in curbs, flashed to the metal roof profile. We coordinate with your general contractor on new construction and additions. See our commercial skylight installation service.

Skylights that are still sound can often be cleaned, resealed, and refastened instead of replaced. Learn more about skylight restoration and wet sealing.

Signs Your Metal Building Skylights Need Repair or Replacement

  • Panels that look yellow, cloudy, or dark and let in less light than they used to.
  • Cracks, crazing, or fibers showing on the panel surface.
  • Drips at panel laps, fasteners, or around curbs after a storm.
  • Loose or backed-out fasteners and gaps in the sealant.
  • No screens or guards over the openings.

Fall Protection for Metal Building Skylights

Skylights on metal roofs are a common fall hazard because older translucent panels can look like the rest of the roof and will not hold a person’s weight. OSHA rule 29 CFR 1910.28 requires protection at any hole, including skylights, that is 4 feet or more above a lower level, using covers, guardrails, travel restraint or personal fall arrest. Skylight screens are commonly rated to hold at least 200 pounds. We install screens, guards, and railings sized to the panel or curb. Learn more about skylight fall protection and guards.

Translucent fiberglass or polycarbonate panels shaped to match R-panel, PBR, corrugated, and other metal roof profiles. They install in the same run as the metal panels.

Framed skylight units set on a raised curb built into the metal roof. The curb carries the flashing, and the skylight can be replaced later without reworking the opening.

Units with a built-in curb, also called deck-mounted or integral-curb skylights. They install in one step and suit smaller openings.

Prismatic lenses spread daylight evenly across a warehouse floor and cut hot spots and glare. We work with Sunoptics prismatic skylights.

What are metal building skylights?

Metal building skylights are skylights made for steel roofs. They are either translucent panels shaped like the roof’s rib profile or framed curb-mount and self-flashing units set into an opening.

A curb-mount skylight sits on a separate raised curb built into the roof. A self-flashing skylight has its own built-in curb, which is why it is also called a deck-mounted or integral-curb skylight.

Yes. In most cases we replace faded or cracked translucent panels with new panels that match the existing roof profile, without reroofing.

Years of strong sun break down the surface of fiberglass and polycarbonate panels. They yellow, get brittle, and let in less light, which is common on desert roofs.

They can, usually at panel laps, fasteners, or curb flashing rather than through the panel. Correct sealing and fastening at installation, and resealing as they age, prevent most leaks.

Yes. OSHA requires fall protection at skylight openings 4 feet or more above a lower level. Screens, covers, guardrails, travel restraint or personal fall arrest systems all meet the rule, and skylight screens are commonly rated to hold at least 200 pounds.

Yes. We can add profile-matched panels or cut new openings for curb-mount or self-flashing units, then flash them to the roof profile.

Yes. Warehouses, distribution centers, shops, hangars, and industrial buildings make up most of our metal building skylight work, and we plan around shifts and operations.

We serve commercial properties across Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and West Texas from our Phoenix headquarters.
